ABSTRACT

From Generality to Detail: The Issue of the Individual Vocal Training of the Choral Singer

In his article, the author focuses on the figure of the singer who simultaneously learns the solo singing and performs in choirs and vocal ensembles. He pays particular attention to eight phenomena emerging from such combination of vocal roles that may impede the development of solo skills. The vocal education system operates in a way that fosters, during its different stages, the students’ participation in collective singing. Based on the author’s observations and professional experience, it follows that the way the students function in choirs and vocal ensembles has a crucial – both positive and negative – influence on their individual vocal development. Therefore, one should make every effort to reduce the negative influence of particular factors. In the context provided, a special need arises for close cooperation between the singing teacher and the choir director.
